Makaton At Cathedral View Childcare
Opening Communication for Every Child

At Cathedral View, we believe that communication is the foundation of learning and connection. That’s why we are proud that many of our staff are trained in Makaton Sign, allowing us to be a setting where every child has the opportunity to express themselves, be understood, and feel included.
Why Makaton Matters in the Early Years
Makaton is a unique language programme that uses signs, symbols, and speech to support communication. It's especially powerful in early childhood, when children are still developing their language skills. Whether a child is pre-verbal, multilingual, or has additional needs, Makaton provides a consistent and accessible way to understand and be understood.
In line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Makaton directly supports:
-
Communication and Language – boosting vocabulary, understanding, and memory
-
Personal, Social and Emotional Development – reducing frustration, building confidence, and supporting emotional expression
-
Inclusivity – ensuring every child, regardless of need or ability, can engage fully in daily life
How We Use Makaton at Cathedral View
Makaton is already woven into our daily routines across each of our settings. Our approach is interactive, inclusive and fun:
-
Signs are used every day during key routines like snack time, nappy changing, transitions and circle time
-
Songs and stories are signed to reinforce language, rhythm, and enjoyment
-
Visual symbols are displayed throughout the environment to support independence and understanding
-
Children are encouraged to use signs to express needs, make choices, and join in group experiences
-
“Sign of the Week” is shared with children and families to build confidence and consistency across home and nursery
A Skilled and Passionate Team
As of now, every Cathedral View staff member, across all three sites, have completed Makaton Level 1, 2 or 3 training, with more training already planned. This ensures a strong, consistent approach across our entire team, helping every child feel seen, heard and valued.
Looking Ahead
Being a chain of Makaton Friendly Settings is more than a goal—it’s a commitment to inclusive communication, skilled practice and continuous improvement.
In the months ahead, we will:
-
Continue training new and existing team members
-
Embed symbols and signs into more areas of learning and play
-
Offer support and resources to parents and carers so Makaton can be used confidently at home
-
Apply for official Makaton Friendly accreditation
Because Every Child Deserves a Voice
At Cathedral View, we’re passionate about giving children the tools to communicate, connect and thrive. Through Makaton, we’re building a setting where everyone belongs—and every voice is valued.
