Understanding Ofsted Inspections

We understand that Ofsted inspections are important to families. This page explains how inspections work, what the new system means, and our inspection history across our settings.

How Ofsted Inspections Work

Ofsted inspects all registered early years settings to ensure children are safe, well cared for, and receiving a high-quality education.

From April 2026, inspection arrangements have been updated to provide families with more regular and detailed information.

Inspections now:

  • Take place within a 4-year inspection window

  • May occur sooner where concerns are identified

  • For newly registered settings, the first inspection usually takes place within 18 months

What Happens During an Inspection

Early years inspections are typically carried out over one full day.

During the visit, inspectors will:

  • Observe children’s learning, development and daily experiences

  • Carry out a joint observation with leaders to discuss practice

  • Speak with staff about the curriculum and how children learn

  • Review safeguarding, welfare and leadership arrangements

  • Consider how well the setting supports all children, including those with additional needs

Inspectors may also speak with parents to gather their views.

The New Ofsted Report Card

The previous single overall judgement (e.g. Good or Outstanding) has now been replaced with a report card system.

Settings are assessed across different areas and awarded grades such as:

  • Exceptional

  • Strong standard

  • Expected standard

  • Needs attention

  • Urgent improvement

This provides a more detailed and transparent picture of quality across the setting.
